A.       Personal Statement

I obtained my Medical Degree with Honors in 2006, receiving top University and National distinctions, including the “Outstanding National University Award”. Then I completed the official training in Cardiology in 2012 and was awarded the “Sanitas MIR 2012” Award (highest National Fellowship distinction in Spain, more than 5000 candidates). Immediately after, I moved into the translational cardiovascular research field at CNIC under the supervision of Dr Borja Ibanez. There, I completed 4 years of full-time research experience under competitive research training programs, and graduated as International PhD in 2017 (Spain’s Royal Academy of Medicine Award). In addition, I hold a Diploma of Statistics and a Master degree of Research Methodology in Health Sciences.

My scientific output includes 76 research articles, 38 of them as first or corresponding author and >90% in Q1 journals, with and h-index of 26 (Google Scholar) and 22 (WOS). I have demonstrated leadership in R&D&I projects in two different fields, namely translational cardiovascular/imaging research and health promotion/cardiovascular prevention. I am the lead author of a landmark series of works describing challenging concepts on the dynamics of inflammation after myocardial infarction as assessed by magnetic resonance. The main findings were published in years 2015 [J Am Coll Cardiol 2015;65(4):315-23 & J Cardiovasc Magn Reson 2015;17(1):92] and 2017 [Circulation 2017;136(14):1288-1300 & Circ Res 2017;121(4):439-450]. In addition, I am a co-inventor of a major industrial innovation in the field of 3D magnetic resonance imaging, which reduces the time of acquisition up to 30x (patent# EP15771635A).

My leadership in the field of health promotion and cardiovascular prevention is emerging (J Am Coll Cardiol 2018;72(25):3310-3319). I obtained a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship focused on health promotion and cardiovascular disease prevention and, under the direction of Dr Valentin Fuster, I have been crucial in the success of health promotion programs targeting both children and adults conducted in USA (J Am Coll Cardiol 2019;73(16):2011-2021 & J Am Coll Cardiol 2020;75(1):42-56), Grenada (Am Heart J 2019) and Colombia (J Am Coll Cardiol 2020;75(13):1565-1578). I am currently leading the Cardiovascular Health and Imaging Lab at CNIC, Spain (https://www.cnic.es/en/investigacion/cardiovascular-health-and-imaging) providing scientific support and coordination for school health promotion programs in Spain and leading the EnIGMA Project that will evaluate early imaging markers associated with unhealthy lifestyles in adolescents.

C.       Contributions to Science

  1. Clinical studies on myocardial infarction and cardioprotection. My early research experience started during my fellowship in Cardiology, and related to the topic of myocardial infarction and the study of I participated as co-investigator in the METOCARD-CNIC clinical trial. This study demonstrated that the administration of early intravenous metoprolol in clinically stable myocardial infarction patients is able to reduce infarct size and improve long-term left ventricular function, as measured by CMR. I was involved in the recruitment and follow-up of patients, and acquisition/analysis of CMR images. In addition, I led several trial sub-studies.   1. Novel methodologies in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. After finishing my fellowship in Cardiology, I completed a fellowship in cardiovascular translational research at CNIC (Madrid, Spain). The research group was multidisciplinary and focused on developing novel CMR methods for the study of the I was deeply involved in developing a translational pig model of myocardial infarction, and on acquisition and analysis of CMR images. Because of this work, I was able to publish as main author significant contributions in the field. In addition, I am participating as an inventor of a major industrial innovation in the field of CMR, which is protected under a granted patent and it is currently in a pre-marketing phase.

The invention relates to the field of generating magnetic resonance images of a moving object in its environment (i.e. heart) within a region of interest by performing a 3D-acquisiton technique which can reduce the time of acquisition by 30x and does not need special training to perform it.

  1. Translational research on post-myocardial infarction edema. By implementing all the training acquired before, I focused my research later on the study of post-myocardial infarction edema. We challenged accepted paradigms, showing for the first time that the edematous reaction during the first week after myocardial infarction is not stable, instead follows a bimodal pattern. I presented this work as Late Breaking Basic Science at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2014 (Chicago, USA) and 2016 (New Orleans, USA). The invention relates to the field of generating magnetic resonance images of a moving object in its environment (i.e. heart) within a region of interest by performing a 3D-acquisiton technique which can reduce the time of acquisition by 30x and does not need special training to perform it.
